Our Company, Shorr Agency, Inc. has a long history spanning six decades.  Our Company was founded by Ben Shorr.  Ben earned his Law Degree from St. Johns University in New York.   It was there that he began his law firm.  In 1949, he moved his family to California to continue his successful law practice.  In the 1950s, he saw an opportunity to branch from law to insurance and created his own Insurance Agency and Brokerage.   In April of 1956, Shorr Agency, Inc. was incorporated and open for business.
Ben's son, Paul Shorr is a graduate of UCLA.  Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics with a minor in Military Science.  The day that he graduated from UCLA was the same day that his military orders were slid under his door to report to active duty in the army.  Paul was promoted to a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He was awarded the two Bronze Stars for Valor and two Purple Hearts.  Both with Oak Leaf Clusters.

In 1956, Paul joined his father in the insurance business.  A few years later, a movie was made about Paul and his  military unit called "Pork Chop Hill" starring Gregory Peck.  Paul consulted on the film, but Hollywood being Hollywood, accuracy was not important.  Paul walked off the set in 1959.

Paul Shorr has contributed to the community through his volunteer work.  In the 1970s, Paul Shorr served as the President of the San Pedro Chapter of the City of Hope.  During the 1980s, in addition to serving as President of Shorr Agency, Paul Shorr served as President and Board Member at the Wilmington Boys & Girls Club.  His most notable contribution was raising the funds to build the Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington which still stands today.  Then Mayor Tom Bradley personally thanked Paul Shorr for his contribution and service to the Boys & Girls Club.
In 1956, our first office was located in Gardena, CA.  From the 1970s through the early 1990s, the office was head quartered in San Pedro, California.  During this time, we insured many people including celebrities such as Dione Warwick (singer), Burt Ward (the original TV Robin of Batman & Robin) and Kenny Norton (heavy weight boxer).  We also insured Hollywood movie companies.   From 1992-2000, we were located in Bellflower, CA.  In 2000, we moved to Long Beach for the next 13 years.  Presently, we've returned home to Palos Verdes Peninsula.  This area is home for the owners and much of the staff.

Throughout the years, Ben's spouse, kids and grandchildren have worked in the family business.  In addition to family, the staff grew over the years as well.  However, with the advent of computers and the internet in the 1990s, we were able to do more with less.

Today, our privately held business is run by Tim Shorr.  Tim is part of the 3rd generation of Shorrs operating the family business.  Tim serves as President & CEO of Shorr Agency while Paul Shorr continues in his role as Honorary Chairman.

Tim is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Arts.  If the name sounds familiar, then perhaps you heard Tim on the radio.  Tim began as a DJ on AM Radio.  Then, was promoted to FM Radio.  Tim worked as a Newscaster at 88.9 FM KXLU in Los Angeles, CA for 5 years.  After radio, he launched in television as a Sportscaster and Director on a cable television station in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Currently, Tim is the voice of our radio commercials, promos and public service announcements that are airing on 93.3 and 102.5 FM KBHR.   In the past, Tim has done voice-over work that aired on 95.5 FM KLOS and 790 KABC AM Talk Radio in Los Angeles.
Tim has volunteered in the community for many years.  He volunteered as a youth counselor with the YMCA of San Pedro back in the 1980s.  In more recent years, he coached youth volleyball for several seasons.  His hobbies include mountain biking, hiking, wake boarding, wake surfing, snow skiing, jet skiing, boating and so much more.
Today, our focus is on providing an exceptional personal experience that keeps folks renewing their policies year after year.  For years, 9 out of 10 people renew their insurance policy with us year after year. 

We've done some cable TV advertising over the years.  Interestingly, this was always out-paced by the number of personal referrals that we receive from clients each month.   Now that we're advertising on the radio, we'll see if word of mouth still outpaces it. 

Our family has long standing roots in the neighboring cities of Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates and Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Both Ben, Paul and their families have resided "on the hill" since the 1960s.
